The routes
Chosen fresh each time you send a broker out. The risk is to the haul, never to the broker - and a lost haul is not recycled: 90% of it is burned forever, 10% flows back into the pool.

Sacrifices
A broker can also be sacrificed: burned out of the 4,444 forever to make one of your other brokers permanently stronger. Each sacrifice grants +33% on every future haul, plus a third of whatever boost the fallen broker carried - feeding a built-up broker is worth more than feeding a fresh one. Three sacrifices per broker, ever. The survivor inherits the fallen broker's unclaimed winnings and its burn record. No undo.
Tiers ride with the broker
A broker can be upgraded three times, and only with coin earned in the forest - ETH cannot buy power here. The full price is burned, and the upgrade is written against the broker itself, not your wallet: sell a tier 3 broker and the buyer gets a tier 3 broker. Every burn a broker makes is recorded on it and shows in its metadata.
